Where's the best place to stay in Canaan Valley?

Answer: Depends on how long your are staying and how many in your group. Many come here just to do nothing: relax, take a few walks and enjoy being in a place where there are more deer than people. However there are many great family day trips to places like Seneca Rocks, Dolly Sods, Smoke Hole, Cathedral State Park, Augusta Summer Music Festival at Davis & Elkins College, Amish farms of Oakland, MD and Deep Creek Lake, MD all between 30 to 45 minutes drive from Canaan Valley. So spend a week if you can. Here's a relative price comparison between different popular Canaan Valley hosts. (Prices are approximate and change with the seasons.)

Blackwater Falls State Park 1 800 225 5982 The original and still champ as far as reasonable rentals and meals. Rustic cabins like you might expect out in the back woods and a huge campground priced at about $14 per night (reserve the higher numbers first). Good dining room priced from $8 (the trout is their specialty for $12) plus must see sunset view of Blackwater canyon and the Falls. Many good hiking trails through lush thickets of rhododendron and mountain laurel. A most popular destination for  young lovers of any age.

Canaan Valley State Park  Resort  1 800 225 5982 Medium size motel room  about $75 per night , small cabins about $700 per week and up includes cable tv, great pool , tennis. Well maintained beautiful grounds, 18 hole golf course, Canaan Valley Ski Area,  lovely formal dining  with panoramic view, (the have a new chef and new menu) specialties from about $14+ but everything else is about $12 including pasta (Sirianni's Cafe in Davis about$6 !) CV Resort is a favorite place for breakfast (try the blueberry pancakes with Tucker County  maple syrup and very lean tasty sausages) and dinner (try the BBQ ribs and chicken). Pool,Golf , Tennis and Grounds open to the public as well as guests. Also a very spacious campground popular for larger campers about $22 (reservations a must!).

Deerfield Village 800 342 3217(Condos) 2 and three bedrooms $160/$190 per night, Cable TV, pool and tennis, Beautifully situated well maintained condo community in the heart of the Valley. My wife likes the dining room here, but I like the Golden Anchor (just over the hill from CV Resort),however BIG JOHN's is by far the most popular and for good reasons. Deerfield is a very popular destination and most units have washers and dryers, some share decks with other units.

                                                                _________
Timberline, 1 800 SNOWING Offers a variety of different types of owner built as well as designer built homes. The prices are too varied to be summarized but being close to the ski area parking lots can cost a lot even when most everyone drives.  Black Bear, Deerfield, Northpoint, Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls State Parks are equally  popular with skiers and some offer bus shuttles to slopes.

Note This is how I see the various offering to visitors to Canaan Valley. I also admit to being sold on Northpoint for a couple of other reasons. First of all the houses at Northpoint are uniformly well built and offer more privacy and better views than most other rentals Larger home of course cost more to rent but offer a more secure vacation. You spend more time inside on vacations than you may realize, our house offers three levels of privacy plus two cable TVs, 12 chanels of HBO, our own DSL wireless network, two VCRs with  several classic movies like "Titanic", and a stereo/radio; 600 sq. ft of wrap-around private decks, your own private hot tub, plus a gas grill and a charcoal grill to compliment the fully equipped gourmet kitchen.
These are Facts. If it sounds like a commercial, at least  it's an honest one.

EMAIL to me IS BETTER! I love answering questions about the Valley; We been vacationing here for 4 years before we bought our house in 1994. I always respond with honest answers rather than sales pitches. Email is easier for me. I try to answer all messages overnight (usually interday). So it's best to send me an email particularly if you want to check the availability our house for your vacation. Then  I have time to update my calendar before replying. This avoids mistakes and misunderstandings concerning rates, dates and what's included (like HOT TUB) and what's not (like WEST VIRGINIA SALES TAX). Martha's cell phone number is 781-771-4056 for those that  prefer not to use email. By the way, many groups have stayed in our house over the years. You can view some typical comments in my quest book . You can view our house (Hummingbird Ridge) here. John & Martha Mueller

Frequently asked questions:

"I would like to rent someplace with a great view and a Hot Tub." about 7 out of 10 messages I get start off that way. Well Northpoint is the place. Almost every one of the 50 houses has a hot tub,  but not all have great views. The newer houses like ours being built father up the mountain have the best views of the valley and are more private as they are widely spaced apart.

Does everything work? Our rental agent has a great full time maintenance and cleaning crew and this is important to consider when comparing rates. Some developments that offer hot tubs don't maintain them correctly. Others have removed hot tubs because of the high maintenance costs, but everyone including little kids, triathlon athletes and the seniors love them. And the folks that love them best are the ones that say "I don't care anything about Hot Tubs!"

All hot tubs are not created equally. The newer ones like ours are 220 volts and  hard wired to special circuits. They clean and circulate the water 24 hours a day 7 days a week 52 weeks a year. They are never shut down! Plus they are sanitized after each rental. But if you don't ask for a newer home like ours (Hummingbird Ridge) you probably won't get one. And the rates believe it or not are identical.
