Welcome
to our Bookstore. Here we feature books we
liked about things we enjoy. It's our way of thanking the writers and publishers
for bringing these books to life. There are so many others out there but
know these are special in our opinion. John & Martha Mueller, editors

Here's
something we know about:
The Lure and Lyrics of the Mountains
Charles Frazier's saga of an articulate wounded Civil War vet fleeing
the savagery of the lost war and encountering savagery of a worse sort
as he attempts to return home. A beautifully written, unforgettable mountain
lyric. Cold Mountain deserves it place as the very best best-seller of
our decade. Now available in paperback. jgm

Colorado Hiking is
our Summer Feature
"I've
been walking around for daze", and I came across some things
along the way that you might enjoy. Whether you are walking around West
Virginia's Canaan Valley Resort's trails ( most a mile or so and flat as
a pancake), or taking to the Bald Knob or Canaan Valley loop trails in
the Monongahelia National Forest or heading out West to challenge Colorado's
14,000' peaks.
Here's some great reference tools to prepare you for the journey.
Even if you just enjoy reading about it! The
Cannan Valley Elf
Great stuff from those that have been there
and done that.
The
Colorado Trail is tough but supremely worth the effort.
Here's a great account with photos by John Fielder and a "soul searching"
trail diary penned by Backpacker Magazine's John Fayhee. It's a beautiful
book and worthy addition to any collection. Photographer Fielder loaded
300 pounds of gear on a pack of Lamas to bring you these photos and they
are unforgettable.
Choose from several excellent editions of this work.
Also
out West where I spent three summers never
getting to the top of legendary Mt. Holy Cross, I discovered an amazing
writer/hiker/historian/humorist (Robert L. Brown) who had a whole lifetime
of Rocky Mountain experiences documented in a series of originally self
published books about the Colorado 14,000' peaks and the early miners who
first dared to tap their riches. They are entertaining as well as informative
and many of the early photos and trail maps worth the modest price of the
books.
Lot's of copycats books out there, but
Robert Brown's work is the real McCoy.

The Appalachian
Trail
Meanwhile back East had the pleasure
of attending Warren Doyle's presentation about the Appalachian Trail. It
was awesome! An inspiring collection of his trail photographs rocked by
some great Dan Fogleberg' music. Dr. Doyle knows a thing on two about the
Appalachian Trail...he's hiked it 10 times!
Now he takes groups and has his own training camp near Elkins, WV. It's
called the ATI (Appalachian Trail Institute). When his group starts down
in Georgia they join hands and form a circle vowing to help each other
get to the trails end way up in Maine where the circle will be reformed.
Matter of fact there is a video about the trail called "Circle of Friends".
Your local video store might have it.
Dr Doyle is also a story teller and judging from the reaction of the
group of adults and children that attended his Canaan Valley Resort presentation...
a darn good one! Want
more info about Dr. Doyle and his ATI .....Send me a email and I'll forward
his snail mail address, that's the only address I have. I offered to get
him online but he has some strong opinions about "computer stuff" and about
most everything else. Like "Rites of Passage
" hikes for youngsters becoming worthy adults.
I'll be updating this page with worthy
hiking information. I publish FREE any hiking organizations calendar of
events soTELL

Hiking in Print: A
Walk in the Woods:
Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail
by Bill Bryson
The integrity and mystic of the AT is maintained. Bryson and
his reformed friend Katz "dropped out" after 870 delightfully entertaining
miles but in the process created one very funny book. An
Environmental Call to Arms.
I know a serious minded guy that cracked-up
reading
"A Walk in the Woods".
His wife had forgotten he could laugh! Heartily
