Blackwater Falls  charms visitors year around and the Blackwater Falls State Park has a great Lodge, Cabins and Campground (reserve the high numbers first). Also they offer reasonably priced meals.

Wilderness Pathways

Challenge the Otter Creek Wilderness or hike the Red Creek trails up into Dolly Sods. You can wear out some boots or take it easy and build up your stamina.  There are many miles of open trails plus special trails for mountain biking. Whitewater rafting and "float" trips operate daily out of nearby Davis. Also its only a few miles to Seneca Rocks where rockclimbers from all over the world come to test their skills.

Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls State Parks offer a weekly schedule of events for outdoor lovers (ask at the front desks). Both parks have fully staffed Nature centers to help you enjoy your visit.  Unlike the high Rockies, you can still breath here. We are only 3500 feet above sea level!

Canaan Valley State Park has some nice beginners trails plus a beautiful 18 hole golf course. Then try the plank-broiled salmon at the lodge! You've earned it. There are lots of things to do and several new additions to the community like Noah's Ark Children's Zoo . If you are looking for a place to stay consider Northpoint Cedar Home Community where a large family or several couples can share a luxurous mountain chalet for about the cost of two motel rooms.
