A Walk In The Woods. Borrowing the title from Bill Bryson's  wildly entertaining book seems fitting for just like the Appalachian Trail , very few hikers are encountered out on the local trails. Even at the State Parks seems like most visitors just drive from vista to vista. But to truly experience these mountains and the unique and timeless harmony of Mother Nature quietly doing her thing park that car and take a walk! Don't want to walk alone, bring your llama. A walk in these woods is a journey back into time. Things are simple here yet defy understanding, old trees sheltering young trees of a different species; strange rivers of rocks sown by vanquished glaciers; thickets of mountain laurel, wildflowers and abundant wild blueberries line the paths like a planned bounty for Summer hikers.

Each season has a special reason. The solitude of winter with snow encrusted trees frame a landscape seemingly uninhabitable yet revealing the footprints of those that call it home; the moody brooding Spring where winter snows slowly yield to the invading rains creating those foggy mists most cherish by poets, eventually the cool mornings and pleasant afternoons of Summer  beckon those seeking relief from hot crowded urban centers and finally then everyone's favorite the Fall.

I hope you will take the time to "walk" in our woods and enjoy the quieter aspects of our area.
This is Canaan Valley, the top of the Mountain State and your footsteps are welcomed here.
